Music Manifesto
It's all their fault! The Music Manifesto was developed by DfES (now DCSF) and DCMS in collaboration with the wider music industry to recommend the way forward for music education in England.

Music Manifesto Report No. 2 recommended a number of major singing initiatives, including a national campaign to put singing at the heart of all primary schools. The Government responded to this brilliantly by announcing £10 million of investment into the National Singing Programme, which has now become £40 million. Yippee!

Singing leader
Anyone who regularly leads group singing activities with young people. By 2011 we aim to have at least two singing leaders in every school. See also young singing leaders.

Singing school
We define this as a school committed to singing, and one in which:

  • all pupils sing for at least five minutes every day.
  • the whole school sings together at least once a week.
  • singing regularly occurs both in and out of the classroom, and in and outside the school day.
  • at least two people are confident to lead singing.
  • pupils sing in performances periodically, and at least annually.
  • the school recognises the value of singing as a teaching and learning tool across the curriculum.
  • the head teacher, governors and staff support singing.

Sing Up School Awards
The Awards recognise, celebrate and promote schools who are committed to singing. Each award involves a journey through an action plan defined by the school, rewarding progress and development.

Silver and Gold are awarded following an online audit and evaluation process. Platinum is awarded by nomination.

Sing Up Communities
Part of the Funded Programmes Workstrand. There are currently 15 Sing Up Communities, each given funds to increase and improve singing in their area. They will work with children and young people who have had little or no experience of ongoing singing activity before.

Each project aims to reach 2,000 children over the course of two years, and will range from whole-school singing to residential courses to community choirs and composition projects based on the ideas and experiences of the children involved.

Song
We define a song as being any piece of music of finite length, suitable for singing, which is set down in print, audio or audio-visual. This includes non-notated repertoire (e.g. orally transmitted, improvised) which may be printed graphically or as instructions, and from a broad range of vocal traditions, including pop or folk song, choral, rap, chant, or singing game.

Song Bank
Pretty much what it says on the tin: an online bank of songs for primary-aged children, covering a huge range of styles and curriculum links, with supporting notes and activities. By April 2009, there will be 300 songs available for download. We’ll also be developing an area for user-generated content, because we want to hear your songs too. No really!
