Are you looking to kick start singing in your school, but don’t know to get started, or perhaps you want to add some extra zing to your existing singing groups?
Then tuck into these recipes for singing success!
The Sing Up Recipe Cards give a small taster of some of the fantastic singing projects that have been raising the roofs of schools across the land. Most of the projects were devised for KS1 and 2 children with little experience of singing and have received national – and in some cases international – recognition for the positive benefits they have brought in enabling young people to enjoy singing as part of their everyday lives.
Although each project was designed specifically to suit the circumstances of the children, schools, and groups in that location, the ideas could be adapted for a range of situations, age groups and levels of ability. So, with just a dash of inspiration and a good dollop of enthusiasm you could be well on your way to cooking up some fantastic singing!
Top tips for singing success
- Choose someone to champion singing in your school or club. This person will actively seek out opportunities for children to sing, co-ordinate expert help if required and, most importantly, maintain the enthusiasm and energy of everyone involved. Could that be you?!
- Consulting other people will help focus your singing activities, making sure they hit the mark, and could prompt new ideas and offers of practical assistance. Talk to teachers, head teachers, parents, school governors and community organisations. Don’t forget to ask the children their opinions about singing and other music activities they take part in elsewhere, as this will help to shape your plans.
- Bring in some expert assistance to help you get started. A vocal animateur could give a demonstration session with the children, helping them gain confidence in finding their singing voice. An expert leader or specialist singing organisation will be able to devise a tailor-made programme to support teachers and other adults to develop their skills in leading singing.
- Singing is fun! There are many educational, social and health benefits to singing, but children enjoy singing for the joy of singing and these benefits are greatly enhanced when it is a happy experience!
