  • Tactics

    • This piece is in three separate chunks, A, B and C. Learn each one separately before you add the body percussion over the top.
      - A is good for getting the mouth working: aim for lots of ‘K’ on ‘Ka-re-oh’ and really bright, in-tune vowel sounds.
      - B is good for loosening the voice with its wide leaps. Have fun and let the voice slide up to the top note.
      - C is good for using the support muscles. Aim for a heavy, well-supported sound on each separate quaver.

    • Now add the suggested body percussion over the top.

    • Try then to perform all chunks in sequence, then repeat it.

    Extended activities

    • Try it as a three-part round, with different groups entering every four bars.

    • If you’re feeling really adventurous, you could try it with different groups coming in after every bar.

    • Invent your own body percussion for the different beats of the bar.

    • You could vary the starting pitch to warm up the full voice range (particularly in sections A & C)

    • Or, use this idea as a template and invent your own language to warm up with. Just have fun and be creative!

It's wonderful to have a warm-up in minor tonality. Can't wait to start using it with my students!
