O-re-mi is an example of Nigerian 'Highlife' music, with a strong Caribbean influence. This song is versatile - it can be sung simply as the melody on its own, as a 2-part round or, for the more adventurous, as a 4-part round at the half bar.

Alexander L’Estrange

Alexander L’Estrange (b.1974) is a fresh and exciting voice in choral music. With roots in the British choral tradition and a successful international career as a jazz musician and arranger, Alexander has been described by composer and broadcaster Howard Goodall as ‘the ideal 21st-century musician’, an accolade acknowledging not just his outstanding musicianship but also his huge versatility. His original compositions include Lute-Book Lullaby, On Eagles’ Wings, Prayers for Peace, Love’s Philosophy and Zimbe!, a 40-minute, African-inspired cantata for SATB chorus, children’s choir and jazz quintet, commissioned by Dorking Choral Society and premiered in November 2008 and which brought together performers young and old from across the local community.

Hamba lulu presents choirs with a terrific opportunity to experience the excitement and energy of African music. The volume taps into a rich seam of African culture and includes Zulu songs of freedom from the years of Apartheid, alongside wedding, Nigerian ‘Highlife’ and walking songs.

The pieces are additive and can be approached in a myriad of different ways: singers can sing everything on the page and even create their own additional variations; while the music will triumph for those who wish to perform half a piece, or combine a selection of the vocal parts.

This was the first song I tried with my small choir in a special school - it was easy for them to learn and we did it unaccompanied as we had to simplify the rhythm. We added drums and percussion whcih worked well.
