Howard Goodall, who is an internationally acclaimed composer and broadcaster has championed music education for many years, and was honoured for his work in the 2011 New Year Honours List with a CBE for Services to Music Education.
In 2007 the then Secretary of State for Education, Alan Johnson, announced funding to support the development of a National Singing Programme and the appointment of Howard Goodall as the National Singing Ambassador.
The role was designed to provide a figurehead and gatekeeper for a campaign and associated programme to encourage more singing in primary schools. Howard, who previously to his appointment had chaired a working party charged with developing a set of recommendations for singing which were part of the Music Manifesto Report No.2 – Making Every Child’s Music Matter, has since worked alongside government, the Sing Up staff and consortium and the many advocates for the programme around the country. He has delivered keynote speeches at conferences, spoken passionately on radio and TV and provided constant encouragement to all those involved in achieving the aim of the programme – that every primary school-aged child should have the opportunity to sing every day.
Following four years as the National Singing Ambassador, Howard Goodall stepped down from this role on the 31st March 2011. His increasingly busy day job meant that he had limited time to give to this honorary role, and he felt that as Sing Up moved into the next phase of its development, it was an appropriate time to stand down.

We recognise the invaluable contribution he has made to Sing Up, and extend a huge thank you to Howard for all of his fantastic work!
