Sounds of stage and screen

A KS4 Music Project by Jane Werry. Sing and analyse music for film, TV and musicals – then compose your own!

The ways in which musical elements can be used to create a mood, a character or set a scene, together with the musical terminology needed to describe this, are significant parts of the understanding required to write a good composition and succeed in the listening exam. In this project, students will start by singing songs, then identify the musical devices used, and finally assemble ideas that can be used in a composition. Note that this project does not look at incidental stage music or 'background' music in films and TV - rather, it looks at songs that contribute directly to the main action of a story.
