Thank you for your comment. I'm afraid we're not sure exactly what the lyrics to Janie Mama translate to. However, we believe that this traditional Jamaican song might have Spanish roots (Jamaica was a Spanish colony known as Santiago between 1509 and 1655, leaving behind a Spanish influence), and that it may have originated as a welcome song.

THIS IS MY ULTIMATE FAVOURITE SONG. IN FACT I STARTED TO CRY WHEN MY CLASS OF LAST YEAR SANG THIS SONG TO ME AS A FAREWELL SONG AS THEY KNOW I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. NOW I AM IN THE UAE AND I WILL BE TEACHING THE CHILDREN AT THE NEW SCHOOL THE SONG TOO. THANK YOU SONGBANK!

janie mama is the number one song for me and we love it at school. i'm in y5 and i love it!
