North West Music Partnership

This flagship project aims to have a significant and lasting impact on whole schools- children, class teachers and senior management teams- and to help inform the national agenda for singing by providing models which can be easily adopted for use in other areas.

These organisations are proud of the North West Music Partnership's track record of high quality delivery in singing to primary and secondary age children across the two cities of Manchester and Salford. This project aims to offer the class teachers who work with children on a daily basis, inspiration and suitable materials to sustain singing activities long after the project is completed. By encouraging young singing leaders to emerge in singing activities, this project is also working to secure the future of singing throughout secondary education and into adulthood.

Aims and Objectives:

This Sing Up Flagship project will enable our partnership to:

Represent

  • Be an ambassador for Sing Up and the benefits of singing, by using our in-house experts to help spread the message about the importance of singing.

Disseminate

  • Share knowledge and understanding with the wider music education sector, in particular through links with the Sing Up Area Leader network.
  • Investigate how other geographical areas may be interested in adopting their own version of the Manchester Singing School or the Salford Jump Start to Singing models.

Develop

  • Deepen the impact and sustainability of our good practice by building on experiences to date. This will include embedding and expanding the initial work at primary/secondary transition and the development of the teaching workforce.
  • Manchester Singing Square project, a 6-week rotating singing support project to engage all Manchester primary schools with singing and working towards the Sing Up awards.
  • Salford Jump Start to Singing programme, curriculum-based singing and musical literacy support to schools and teachers, extended to 12 additional schools.
  • Year 7 singing project across both cities, to include;
    1. Network of secondary school music teachers established for networking, support and training opportunities
    2. Identification of young vocal leaders moving up to year 7 from primary schools
    3. Support for teaching year 7 music in the classroom
    4. Support leading to Big Sing events, where children from several school come together to sing.
  • Development of resources, in particular recordings and Smartboard materials, and free training for teachers to be able to use the resources.
  • Singing showcase opportunities for years 3-7, often using secondary schools to host events for local primary school children.
