Sing Up Bristol aims to create new, high quality singing opportunities in a range of genres for 2,000 children and young people living within the East Central area of Bristol.
Hosted by Colston Hall Education Department-the REMIX, Youth Music Action Zone, the community aims to support the work of schools and grass-roots singing organisations to ensure a legacy of sustainable singing activity and partnership working in this area of the city.
We also aim to address key localised challenges where singing can play a part in aiding children's learning and development; including school attainment, integration and alternative education and provision. Adopting a young person centred approach is an integral part of the process; recognising the positive role of performance and peer role models as fundamental aspects of each project of event.
The 'Language Through Arts' programme is our pilot project , started in May 2008. Funded as a partnership with Extended Schools in the East Central 3 area, this 10-week programme aims to develop the speaking, listening and language skills of children for whom English is a second language. Singing and language games with two experienced ESOL Teachers and Music Leaders provide a fun way to learn a new language and a new song each week, leading to an end performance to school staff, family and friends.
