Learn the chant first; making sure the rhythm is accurate.
Next, add the actions over the top. Choose someone from the group to suggest an action for the last bar.
Once you have learnt this chant with the actions, you can start to play with it a little more.
Perform it without the chant (just the actions). At first it will tend to rush, as people don’t like silences. Work on this and stress that each individual needs to concentrate and take responsibility for not rushing.
Then try it as a round. You could start as a three-part round (each group starts two bars later than the previous group), before splitting the group into six (each group starts a bar later than the previous group) when you are more confident.
If you’re feeling brave, do it as a round again but this time leave out the chant! Notice how it sounds like a cool drum rhythm.
Why not come up with your own body percussion (claps, stamps, finger clicks etc.) or actions to replace the ones in this example?
Once you are comfortable that you know this warm-up, the tempo (speed) could be gradually increased to emphasise the importance of timing, counting and concentration.
Get involved! You can add your own comments.
