  • Tactics

    • Learn the call-and-response introduction, verses and ending.

    • Each verse pick a different person to name what to feed the monkey.

    • The verses build cumulatively.

    • Keep going until you can’t remember the order or the group runs out of suggestions! If you are pushed for time, predetermine the number of verses (eg. 4 or 5). You can always play the gamemore than once in order to give more children a chance to pick a food.

    • Try to keep the tempo lively to help keep the warm-up moving.

    Extended activities

    • Nominate a leader who is not the teacher. Make sure that he/she really concentrates on keeping the pitch accurately for the beginning of each verse.

    • You could use a different animal for the song. Maybe the nominated leader could choose what animal to feed next and come up with the accompanying descriptor (ie. ‘chirpy chicken’, ‘funny bunny’ or ‘zippy zebra’ instead of ‘funky monkey’)

    • You don’t need to focus on animals in this warm-up. You could try a version ‘Time to go to market’ and include suggestions of what you might buy there.

    • When it comes to nominating the foods for each verse, you can either go through them in the pre-determined order (as per the audio example) or have the leader point at someone a bar before and sing that person’s suggestion next, so that you sing through all the suggestions in a random order. Keep going until you have sun  everyone’s suggestion once.

    • The more verses you do, the longer the chain. See how long you can keep it going!
