This chapter is all about how our voices change throughout our lives. Choosing appropriate songs and warm-ups for a singer's particular stage of growth is essential to them enjoying themselves and developing as they sing. As such, it’s important to understand the limitations of the voice at its various stages of development.
There are several key points to learn about the voice as it grows:
The infant larynx has a very different function from that of a child or adult, limiting the young child’s singing ability.
The larynx grows throughout childhood in line with the rest of the body.
During puberty, the larynx grows much more in boys than in girls, enabling the characteristic dropping of pitch as the boy enters manhood.
Male voice change is divided into five phases, which parallel other changes in puberty. It’s better to refer to this as voice ‘change’ rather than voice ‘break’.
The female voice also changes during puberty. Alongside changes relating to a slight growth of the larynx, there is a variability in hormone levels caused by the onset of menstruation.
In the latter half of middle age, the voice starts to change alongside the body’s overall ageing process. Staying fit and healthy is the best way to ensure you stay on top form despite these changes.
