Duration
45 mins - 1 hour
Learning objectives
-
Children will learn that humans have bodies with similar parts.
-
Children will learn about the names of parts of the body, including some bones.
Resources
-
Dem bones - all audio tracks
-
Template of the human body
-
Interactive whiteboard
Introduction
-
Share the Learning objectives with the children at the start of the session.
-
Explain to the children that they are going to learn a song called Dem bones.
-
Display the words to the song on the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) and play the song to the children.
-
Learn to sing the song, starting with the performance track and then moving on to the echo track.
-
Without listening to the track, ask the class to focus on the section of the song which discusses the connection of bones within the body. Discuss the words together.
-
Now stand at the front of the class and point to the correct parts of your own body as the children sing the song. Children then copy your dance/movement and begin to learn the names of parts of the body.
Main activity
-
To start, play ‘Simon Says’ with emphasis on naming the parts of the body correctly.
-
Then sit the children on the floor and ask each to name a part of their body, and then also point out this part of the body on someone else, reinforcing the idea that all of the class have the same parts with some differences.
Independent activity
-
Give pupils a template of the human body, and ask them to write the names of the different parts on the template.
Differentiation
Support
-
Group the children in mixed-ability pairs/groups.
-
Offer more prompts of support to the less able.
Extension
-
Get the children to name parts of the body not already mentioned in the lesson. Get the children to also give an explanation of what the part does eg. the skull - protects the brain (note these down and discuss with the class at the end).
Plenary
-
Call out the names of parts of the body. The children must then point to the parts of the body on themselves. After each body part, ask what do we use this particular part of the body for, eg. we can use our legs for running, we can use our hands for writing, etc.
-
Sing Dem bones again, remembering to point to all the parts of the body as they are mentioned. Use either the backing or performance track depending on how well the children know the song.
Assessment for learning
Can the children:
-
Name parts of the body on themselves and others?
-
Understand that we all have the same body parts with small differences?
Next steps
-
Begin to introduce the five senses, so that children begin to be able to distinguish between them.
Differentiated success criteria
All children will:
-
Understand that we all have bodies with similar parts.
Some children will:
-
Be able to name some parts of the body.
-
Be able to point to named parts of the body verbally and in writing.
A few children will:
-
Be able to develop knowledge of human body parts outside of the skeleton ie. tongue, teeth, nails, hair etc.
