I work as a teaching assistant in a specialist school for pupils with Autistic Spectrum conditions. Some of our pupils find it really difficult to understand or express emotions. I work in a year 5/6 class also lead singing club and choir and I have adapted this chant to teach emotion expressions such as sad, happy, crying, laughing, angry, shy, worried and the children seemed to learn really quickly. Some of our children can now lead this song with confidence and are now sharing their own ideas to adapt voice types etc. We also use this to warm up before singing.

I used this song recently with Y2 and we really enjoyed it a lot :) I encouraged boys to find some more options of singing the song and their ideas were great!!! Some ideas I remember: sing like old people, like aliens, feeling tired or angry, and so on.

There are further extensions to this song which are great for drama warm ups. Using different voices (posh, witches etc). There is also a space and cleanin version that the children find really funny.

I use a version of this with an added lyric, 'I said a ' boom a chick a boom, to just add to the mood, we also use a finger click pulse and actions to match each new verse. Our last line is 'real quiet, real loud etc. Some favourite versions are italiano, real robotic and we finish with real cool, no way! i've used this with every age in primary school and use it with every group of student teachers that I teach. Its a good way to experience and explore all of the musical elements in one go. A child taught this to me 20 year ago. Chris Robson MMU

I used this very successfully with Y6. I had been sceptical as to their response but was pleasantly surprised at how much they enjoyed it AND participated!
