The new KS2 Music CPD Programme is proving to be right on track

If the following comments from practitioners on the new Key Stage 2 Music CPD Programme are anything to go by, it’s a huge success:

“I got enthused and started the first core module which has already given me lots to think about. At last a music course that will push me in the right direction!”

“A great start to this new course. I’m very much looking forward to continuing”

“I enjoyed the course and even though I don’t have a musical background, it enabled me to see how I could do this with KS2 children”

The programme opened its doors in April, and over 1,000 classroom teachers, instrumental specialists and community musicians have already signed up.

It is run by The Open University and Trinity Guildhall, and is funded by the DCSF so it is free for participants. It is aimed at music practitioners who are involved in the delivery of whole class instrumental and vocal teaching at KS2. Previously called Wider Opportunities, whole class instrumental and vocal work is revolutionising the way primary school children experience practical music making.

The programme offers learning opportunities and support in four integrated and interdependent ways: Online learning; Workshops; Mentoring; Online conferencing and support.

With such a diverse range of participants the CPD programme has to be adaptable. Each participant completes a needs analysis with the support of their mentor. This gives them a personalised learning path which can be adapted as their knowledge develops.

Practitioners engage with various online modules and attend half-day workshops. On completion they receive a certificate from The Open University.

Early feedback from practitioners indicates that the online modules and workshops are being well received. A workshop analysis revealed that 94 per cent of participants said that the degree to which the programme supported their professional development was excellent or good.

There are still places available on the programme. For more details, visit: www.ks2music.org.uk
