For more than 30 years, Music for Youth has been engaging youngsters from all over the UK - and they keep coming back for more...

Since its inception in 1971, Music for Youth has provided free access to performance opportunities for more than two million children, aged from four to 21. Every style of music and ensemble – from Bhangra to big band and rock to orchestral – is featured in an annual nationwide series of festivals and free concerts. Every year around 100,000 young people, 85 per cent of whom are from the maintained sector, take part in or attend live performances.

The Music for Youth year comprises four major events: the Regional Festival Series, the National Festival, the Schools Proms and the Primary Proms. The Regional Festivals provide many thousands of young music-makers with nationwide access to live performance opportunities in concert venues and music centres throughout the UK. There are no fees or entry requirements, and these regional festivals represent a unique opportunity to take part in an artistic alliance with others of their own age and perform live in front of new audiences. Musical experts are also on hand to encourage, celebrate and contribute advice on their performances.

Leading on from the Regional Festival Series is the National Festival of Music for Youth. Groups invited to perform at the National Festival are drawn from the Music for Youth Regional Festival Series in March. The National Festival is the largest event of its kind in the world! Some 12,000 young musicians and singers perform more than 800 different works at a six-day celebration of young people’s music-making. Every style of music is represented and the young music-makers come from every corner of the UK.

The culmination of the Music for Youth year is the Schools Proms. Audiences are treated to three joyous nights of high-quality performances at the Royal Albert Hall embracing every kind of music, ranging from rock bands to near professional orchestras. Some 3,000 talented youngsters showcase the exuberance, skills and talent of young musicians, singers and dancers from all over the country.

On each evening massed choirs of more than 550 children sing at the world’s most famous concert hall before a triumphant climax with a spine-tingling finale of fireworks, balloons and Elgar’s stirring Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 – Land of Hope and Glory.

Inner-city inspiration
Alongside the three core events, Music for Youth also organises the Primary Proms. These free concerts target inner-city children and are aimed at enhancing their creative and spiritual development through music. The concerts, performed by young musicians, are staged in major concert venues and provide a unique opportunity to experience live music of all kinds. For the majority of the four to 11-year-olds, the Primary Proms represents their first encounter with live instrumental and vocal music making and is a truly inspirational experience.
