A small school from nursery to year 6, the staff and students Ravenscroft Primary School really do see the benefits of singing every day.
“In 18 months,” Nicky Cochrane explains, “we have achieved the Silver and Gold Sing Up Awards, introduced a KS1 singing club and established a still growing KS2 choir; we have Young Singing Leaders in Year 6 who lead songs in assemblies, classes and at lunchtime singing stops around the school and we use Sing Up resource packs to spread singing to other areas of the curriculum.”
The big event
Nicky is thankful to the fantastic team who help spread the Sing Up way of learning: “National Sing Up Day gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate all the singing throughout our school.”
This year Ravenscroft Primary are holding a very special assembly with parents, carers and governors invited. “Our singing leaders will lead the whole school and audience in ‘Come dance with me’. There will be performances from each year group, KS1 singing club, KS2 choir and soloists, ending with a whole school sing-along including staff and parents, led by our KS2 choir.
“We have also signed up to Practice-a-thon to raise money for children with cancer. The events will be attended by members of the local press and the Liverpool Echo who have also said they are going to feature us as School of the Week!"
Sing up, sing out!
Nicky and her students are now very excited to be working towards their Platinum Award which has encouraged the school to extend their singing into the community: “In November 2011 our Year 6 children joined forces with two other schools in the area to perform at an Awards celebration evening held in Huyton. We sang ‘One love’, ‘Ain’t no mountain’ and ‘Walking on sunshine’.
“Being involved with Sing Up has completely transformed our school. We have already signed up for our Sing Up Membership for next year and are really looking forward to National Sing Up Day when we can all enjoy the magic and spread a little singing!”
