Why buy Sing Up?

Need convincing? Sing Up will transform your school and here's how...

Why buy Sing Up?

Sing Up transforms school life, improves learning and builds stronger communities.

"The Sing Up programme is the single most effective initiative I have come across in my 20 year teaching career."
– Ian Squire, Music Subject Leader, Red Marsh Special School

"Sing Up has helped our children with their learning across all subjects, developing their concentration and memory retention, and creating a real sense of belonging. It’s brought a feel-great factor to our school."
– Chao Cox, Music Co-ordinator, Grimsdell Mill Hill Pre-Preparatory School

"I really don’t see how any primary school teacher gets by without using Sing Up. It brings the power of song to everyone regardless of ability and transforms the classroom environment."
- Jackie Schneider, Music Teacher at Poplar Primary and St Teresa’s Primary Schools

Great value

Sing Up is great value, for just £150 a year*, your school can have:

  • access to the Sing Up Song Bank: 500+ songs and teaching resources for use across the curriculum and for a wide range of key stages
  • unlimited on- and off-line access to our Digital Songbook: 100 songs, tailor-made for use in primary schools,
  • two training places (alone worth more than the membership fee),
  • the ability to work towards and achieve a prestigious Sing Up Award in recognition of what you are doing,
  • as well as loads of extra benefits including the termly Sing Up magazine which is jam-packed with teaching tips and lesson plans and comes with a free CD giving you 10 new songs per term.

Top of the class

You’ve all noticed how easy it is to learn things when you sing them. Sing Up has over 500 curriculum-tagged songs in the Song Bank, as well as the associated resources to make teaching them stress-free. Sing Up’s experts select and tailor songs and supporting resources to a primary school’s needs. We make sure that all songs are in the best key for young voices, that the arrangements aren’t too difficult or too high or low in pitch, we also create all the curriculum and activity links that teachers need in order to build singing into every aspect of the school day.

“Learning songs and rhymes has had a big impact on the youngest children and early acquisition of language. It has helped their phonics and listening skills.”

– Teacher, Samuel Lucas JMI School

Spread a little singing…

It’s not just the children who flourish in Sing Up schools. Sing Up has trained over 50,000 teachers since its launch, and they’ve told us how fantastic Sing Up training has been in helping them to develop their confidence in using singing as a teaching tool.

“A year ago, if somebody would have asked me to sing with my class I probably would have resorted to nursery rhymes. Now I can fill a day with singing games, chants, beatboxing and songs about pretty much any subject going!”

– Stephen Caldwell, Teacher, Cuddington Primary School

Everyone is drawn to a singing school, and many of our Sing Up Award schools are robust musical hubs for the wider community, with parents, grandparents, clubs and church-goers all doing their bit in making it tuneful.

“At Livingstone Lower School the OFSTED Inspector was brought to tears by a fantastic singing performance! This is a multicultural and faith school that has been using singing across the curriculum as a device to cut across language and cultural barriers and bring everyone together.”

– Sing Up Bedfordshire

Dem bones!

The physical benefits of singing are well documented, too. Professor Graham Welch from the Institute of Education says, “Singing is an aerobic activity which improves the efficiency of the body’s cardiovascular system. It oxygenates the blood, improves overall alertness (which is why it’s a great way to re-engage a class as they begin to flag after lunch!), and it’s even known to improve airflow in the upper respiratory tract lessening opportunities for bacteria to flourish.”

This coupled with the fact many doctors believe singing is an immune system booster, makes singing a cheap way to feel better, be it physically or psychologically.

Given all these wonderful benefits, the question is, no longer 'are you singing with Sing Up' but if you're not - 'Why not'?

Let’s keep the whole place singing!

I was about to subscribe to the site, when I read the comments above. I would agree to pay the £200/ year annual subscrition for my school if that gave me access to all of the songs and lyrics. However, it is not at all clear in the advertising that this is not the case and that actually there is only access to 100 songs, wuith the rest as pay to download. I think this represents poor value for money, at a time when schools budgets are under such strain. I am very disappointed. Singup has been a fabulous resource and, whilst I didn't expect it to be free forever given the current financial climate, it seems to have swung to the other extreme. What a shame.

Thank you for your feedback. Thank you especially to all those of you who have bought Sing Up in this first wave of our new membership scheme. We are keen to work with you over the next few weeks to find out how you are finding the new membership package and to see how we can adapt it where necessary suit your needs. So please keep the feedback coming – we are listening to it all.

From your feedback so far, we are hearing that some of you think you might need more streams and would also like more access to the lyrics when streaming, some of you would like more choice over which songs you get access to and some of you would like download credits. So we will be looking into all these things over the coming 6 weeks, and will try to find ways to address them.

We're also working as quickly as possible with our web developers to solve some of the access problems that a few of you are having with our site at the moment.

Please don't hesitate to contact us.

All the best,

The Sing Up Team

Dear Mrs Hartley,

Thanks for your message. Which song are you trying to download? If you have bought school membership you should be able to download the sheet music and audio tracks from any of the 100 songs in the Digital Songbook. We've realised today that there is a bug in the Song Bank which tries to charge some users a Download Credit for the sheet music for free Digital Songbook songs. We've reported it to our web developers and they are working to try and fix this as soon as possible. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

If you are trying to download a song which isn't included in the Digital Songbook, then you will need to purchase it separately – downloads are available to purchase in bundles of 5 or 15. For Sing Up Members like you who might want to only download the sheet music (rather than the full song bundles with audio downloads), we are looking into a way of enabling you to do this. Watch this space.

Quite agree with the comments by Mrs Hartley and Ms Cyster. I, too, persuaded our head to pay for Sing-up only to find it's virtually useless - can't afford to pay extra for downloads to access lyrics/music and cant teach a song properly without them - also can easily play the same song several times in one lesson and though 900 streams may sound a lot, I can see them soon being used up if everyone in school does this - more so if they listen to entire song(s) before using it in class. It actually says on SIng Up pages on "why buy Sing Up" that "Sing Up is great value, for just £150 a year*, your school can have:

access to the Sing Up Song Bank: 500+ songs and teaching resources for use across the curriculum and for a wide range of key stages" This was the reason we purchased membership. It does NOT say that these will only be 30 second snippets of these songs, you wont be able to see the lyrics or view the music unless you pay even more money!! Yes, I'm aware you can access the 100 songs in the digital songbook but the implication is, as far as I'm concerned, that by becoming a member access would be on the same level as before paying membership took effect. i.e. access to all songs, lyrics etc. Sadly it seems that this is definitely not the case and judging by other comments I am not the only one that feels they have been misled. Your literature needs to be a lot more specific for potential future members to avoid this happening to anyone else. Sing-up was such a brilliant resource before membership charges came in that I feel bad about having such a moan. With a bit of tweaking on the charges/accessible resources I'm sure it could be again. Nonetheless, at the moment I am feeling totally ripped off and seriously considering asking for a refund!! As things stand I cannot see us renewing our membership next year, simply not worth the money I'm afraid. Utterly disappointed. Sing Up, I await your comments.

How disappointing! Having managed to convince my headteacher that we should pay the membership fee to enable us to continue to access this wonderful resource, went to download the sheet music to use in rehearsals and found that this would cost an additional payment! Without the music in front of me, how can I be expected to teach a song properly! This has proved to be a very costly error and one that, at present, I will not be repeating in future years. I agree with the comment made by Ms Dalton ' a pay by download' and a smaller subscription fee would be much more acceptable. I also do not consider that it was made clear enough when I purchased the membership that I would be unable to download the music without the additional expenditure. A real shame! Buyers Beware!

Dear Mrs Daveys and Ms Cyster

Thanks for your comments. With Sing Up Membership, you are able to download the 100 songs provided in your digital Song Book. This includes the performance tracks, backing tracks, sheet music and all other associated learning resources. Just click on the 'My Library' link in the top right hand corner of the page once you've logged in.

You also have continued full access to the entire Song Bank to stream songs directly from the website. This is a great way of getting to know a song before downloading it or using other songs from the Song Bank in lessons when you know you may not need the song for further future use.

On top of this, you can purchase download credits to supplement the 100 songs already available for you. One credit unlocks the entire song including all the teaching aids and tailor-made resources. It is this synergy of songs, support and resources that we know makes great singing schools and it is part of the Sing Up agenda to offer this as a complete learning tool to aid non-music specialists and musicians alike.

If you have any further questions we can help with, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

I too would like to express my disappointment at the changes to signup.org. Before the implementation of the payment system I considered this a very good resource but unfortunately these charges make the resources less accessible to all teachers and learners - surely this is works against the Sing Up agenda for getting people singing?

In addition, I notice that once having paid-up the membership costs one has to pay for extra download credits should they exceed their inclusive allowance, I would have assumed that paying the membership alone would have given access to all resources not have to pay yet more money for this. I find also that it can be difficult to tell whether a particular song will work with my classes until I've seen/heard all of the resources available therefore I could end up spending lots of money downloading and then not using the materials.

I can understand that we cannot expect to have access to good resources for free, however I think this payment structure could use some re-thinking (perhaps a pay per song system) so as to not deny a greater number of people access to the library of resources Sing Up can offer.

I am very disappointed with the changes made to Sing Up. I teach in a primary school and have always struggled with teaching music. Sing Up has been a revelation, inspiration and life saver. The children love the songs and the whole set up is user friendly for a busy class teacher. While I do not expect to be able to access the service for free, I do not feel able to ask my school to pay this amount per year and there is no way I can afford the individual subscription. A "pay per download" with a smaller annual subscription would be fairer and enable more teachers to access these outstanding resources and develop children's enthusiasm for and enjoyment of singing.

I'm a music specialist working with three different school weekly. Purchasing a singup membership at all three schools seems silly and a waste of money. I recognise that it is an incredibly useful tool for many teachers but now it is only avaibable to a select few with unrestricted budgets. It's a shame.

I am so sorry that our small yet growing school will not have the use of 'Singup' very soon. The difference it has made for the children is wonderful, I know that they will miss it too.

We are a small but growing school that is not able to pay for the membership. I thought that I might pay for it myself so that the school could still benefit, that was until I read that it was the school that has to become a member and then I saw the cost!

I am happy to pay for the use of 'Singup', knowing that a lot of work goes into what the website provides but I cannot spend all of my Music budget on it. Is there not another way forward so that we do not lose this fantastic source of songs at the click of a mouse?

This is a disaster.

I am a peripatetic teacher for a County Music Service, working with choirs as well as whole class groups. We have a large group of staff involved in these projects and we all use Sing Up regularly. Individual schools are not signing up for membership so we will loose access unless there is membership for individuals or Music Services. The material has been excellent over the years and we have use a wide variety of songs, many of which I would not have found through other sources. I don't want to go back to a few expensive books which may only have one or two songs in each that I want to use.

Please find some way of giving individual or organisation membership, and of cutting the costs as many people will not sign up at these prices.

Sing up has been an invaluable tool for enriching children's musical development. However, I feel that £210 per year is a disgraceful amount of money to ask of cash strapped schools. It is all very well and good asking people to fund raise to pay for the subscription yet with the current economic climate, schools are putting any fund raising cash towards the key essentials! Most schools have access to cd's and other online material (which may not be as good or easy to use) thus making it impossible to truly class a subscription as a key essential! I do feel many schools will be unable to subscribe due to the cost and this will inevitably lead to the eventual demise of the site. Such a shame and so short sighted; surely it would be better to charge less and get all schools on board ensuring costs are met rather than charging larger amounts, having fewer schools on board and then having to increase fees even further next year to recoup?

Thank you for your comments. For more information please read our Where does the money go and Freelancers/Individuals news stories for more information.

For those wondering about other packages, as we’ve mentioned before, we are in the process of developing affordable and flexible options for individuals, organisations and families. In April, all our existing users will be able to become Sing Up members – rest assured, we haven’t forgotten anyone! The reason that we launched our schools package first is that we wanted to help them as we know that many set their budgets for the year around this time. In April, everyone who is currently registered with Sing Up should be able to find an option that suits them.

From our wealth of experience, supported by five years’ of research, Government feedback, the National Music Plan and the most recent Ofsted Report on Music Education, we know that Sing Up’s unique synergy of songs, resources and training is the key to successful singing schools across the country, which is why we are not offering a simple song purchasing system. We want to offer the same level of quality provision and have developed a package that we know works for schools.

We are taking note of your feedback, and hope you choose to continue to be part of the Sing Up family!

I agree with a lot of the comments here. All our teachers have used Sing up at some point but I just can't justify spending what would be my entire Music budget on 1 subscription as I would have nothing left for anything else. If it was more like £50 with perhaps a download limit on number of songs then I would definitely purchase it. I think it's a shame there aren't more membership options - it's all or nothing it seems!

No way have I had 150 pounds worth of usage however. I would be more than happy to pay per song downloaded, in the same way one does on itunes for example, but no way could contemplate joining up at such high costs. Sing up is a wonderful resource, and it saddens me that it is now becoming out of reach for many people, and children at home and abroad will ultimately miss out.

Unfortunately, none of the answers seems to address the problem of individuals such as freelancers and foster carers being able to afford to access the scheme.

What about community music organisations like ours - Gloucestershire Music Makers? We were part of the Sing Up LAC project and will be leading the singing strategy work for our local Music Education Hub, we need our freelancers to be able to access songs (training is less of a problem as we will probably be manageing it). Not being a school the sing up award is not really relevant. Are we excluded from the web site after subscription comes in?

Is there any way that individual freelancers can join? Our Music service is changing and most musicians working in schools are likley to be freelancers in the longer term.

What about foster carers? We have been encouraging them to use the Sing Up resources and have been distributing "Foster Carers Can". It might be possible to organise a singlesingle subscription for all foster carers in the County, using the total number of LAC in foster care as an equivelent to school size. If this is not possible, they now going to be excluded? That will be a real blow for LAC.

Dear all,

Thanks for your feedback. We are taking all of it on board as we move into our new phase. Our new membership package will allow Sing Up to continue on a not-for-profit basis.

Sing Up continues to aim to ensure that children get to enjoy singing as part of their daily lives. We’re also dedicated to helping you improve and enhance the quality of singing and singing leadership in schools. For this reason, and after extensive evaluation, we put together a membership package comprising not just a catalogue of songs, but the appropriate support, resources and training to make sure the quality of singing in schools is there, and continues to grow.

From our wealth of experience, supported by five years’ of research, Government feedback, the National Music Plan and the most recent Ofsted Report on Music Education, we know that it is this synergy of songs, resources and training that is the key to successful singing schools across the country.

The Sing Up Song Bank is a wonderful resource of over 500 songs covering the whole curriculum – and we are keen to keep expanding the collection. With your Sing Up membership you will still have full access to the Song Bank, allowing you to browse through and preview or stream songs before downloading them and their accompanying teaching tools.

We feel your two free training places are just as important as access to the Song Bank for ensuring the quality of singing leading in your schools. If you are the Music Coordinator or are confident in your singing leading, why not share them with other colleagues so you can increase the number of singing leaders in your school – and spread a little singing?

For a full break-down of costs and exactly what you’ll be getting with your membership package, please visit our membership pages. If you have any queries, please get in touch.

I am most disappointed by the decision to offer a digital songbook rather than simply give each suscribing member 100 downloads. It's not that the songs chosen aren't good... in fact I like some of them so much that I have already learned and taught 40 of them so that takes me down to 60 songs. Then you consider that my school has Early Years and Key Stage 1 only so 33 songs are unsuitable for our use. So I am left with 27 songs, many of which I have listened to before and decided not to use. Surely it could have been possible to allow schools to choose their own songs for an individual digital songbook or playlist?

The sense of pride and self esteem in children and parents has been amazing, not to mention the pride that I fell as the teacher. However, just to echo many of the opnions shared by others, we just cannot afford the subscription. We are already fundraising for other essentials in school and our budget is set to worsen. I understand that this is the fault of the current government and not Sing Up so I do hope all these comments are being passed on to the relevant politicians. Another sad comment. We have always sung but we really appreciated the free access to the songbank, not just because of the huge number of songs, but because of its convenience. We would love a really cheap and cheerful Sing Up option with a maintained song bank and no extra frills. The Sing Up team has done a great job getting so many schools involved and inspired but maybe now it is time to wind down and just maintain the excellent existing resources.

I also agree that the money would be better spent on the downloads, not the training places. I have been using Sing Up all over the county since it started, have been a Sing Up trainer, and as a composer have one of my songs on the site. So I couldn't be much more committed to it. But I feel that the lack of downloading and the limited streaming is going to dramatically affect the amount that I use it. Not so much for me, but for the schools that I work in. In the last two or three years I have deliberately written my schemes of work to use Sing Up resources. This is partly so that the class teachers that I work with can use the songs in their classroom when I'm not there. However the most powerful tool is that the children have also been able to access the songs at home to practise and enjoy. All of this is now under threat because of the limits on downloading and streaming. Is there a chance of you rethinking your policy?

Dear all,

Thanks for your feedback.

If you’re having trouble budgeting for Sing Up membership, why not think about fundraising for it? National Sing Up Day is just around the corner on 2nd March and it’s a great chance to put on a fundraising concert or hold a sponsored sing-a-thon and invite the whole community! Have a look here for more ideas.

It’s good to remember that Sing Up is not solely a music resource; it is a whole-school, cross curricular tool so funding could come from parts of your school's budget outside of the music budget - for example, the school training budget. If you need something to help sway your Heads, have a look through the extensive research we commissioned into the benefits of Sing Up.

If your school is in receipt of additional 'Pupil Premium Funding' you could also discuss with your Head whether Sing Up might be appropriate use of a small part of that funding. Schools should be receiving an additional £488.00 for every pupil entitled to free school meals. Sing Up is proven to be a help in building strong school communities in a way that is genuinely inclusive for every pupil, and can particularly benefit those from challenging backgrounds. For about one-third of the Pupil Premium for one pupil, Sing Up can benefit every child in the school. More information on demonstrating effective use of Pupil Premium funding is available on the DfE's website

Additionally, if you don't have sufficient funds in the current year's budget to pay for your Sing Up membership, but would like to buy it from your 2012-13 budget, please get in touch, because we can arrange this for you.

Are you planning a fundraising event? Share your ideas and let us know what you’re up to!

We started our Sing Up Journey in September 2009. During the past three years, we have benefited enormously from the Sing Up brilliant FREE resources. We really appreciate all the support from the Sing Up team. Without Sing Up, our school would not achieve our successes.

We are very sad to hear that the government has stopped funding Sing Up. Under the current economic climate, we understand Sing Up has to do something to keep them going. We encourage schools to sign up the new Sing Up membership as this will help them keep their journeys going and be beneficial to the children's musicality.

As a Platinum award school, we will be supporting Sing Up to carry on. We are very delighted to be a new member of the Sing Up scheme. We know that school budgets are very tight at the moment. However, if we all support each other, we will overcome this hurdle and ensure that singing is at the heart of our children's lives in the future.

Firstly, I agree that the subscription is quite steep but since using Sing up we have seen a huge improvement and enjoyment in singing throughout the whole school. Every single member of staff, from the Head to lunchtime supervisors, now sing regulalry with the children. Singing is at the very heart of our school and without Sing up this would not have been possible. I have been the music co-ordinator here for 16 years and I remember a time when I would have to spend hours in the shops finding new songs - sometimes paying £20 per book. When everthing a music specialist and non-specialist needs is right there at your fingertips how can you not invest in such an amazing resource which benfits all! The support you get from the sing up team and training is invaluable also and once again I can only thank Sing Up for this. I am very lucky to have such a supportive headteacher who really does see the need for this amazing addition to our schools singing!

I would not think twice, if the price that you pay for the yearly subscriptions included unlimited downloads. The amount of downloads that is included really doesn't seem to warrant the high price, especially with the high price of buying extra credits.

After showing the prices to my Head, she has suggested I use the yearly subscription to buy a large collection of songbooks.

Sing up! is a fantastic resource that I will be very sad to lose - why not think about having an option where you can have unlimited downloads instead of the training places.

I'm aware of the need to cover costs when money is being withdrawn from all angles, but I find this amount shockingly high. Our school really just doesn't have the money to spend on this. It's all very well suggesting fundraising to get the money, but we are already fundraising for so many things, there is no way I can ask for this as well. I'm also amazed at even when you subscribe, you then need to buy additional credits! If a subscription was all inclusive I would possibly consider, but I find this a real blow to the belt to music, in our school and, I expect, in others.

I think we need to give Sing Up a chance here - when something has been free for so long it is always a shock to the system.

£10 for the magazine is the amount for additional copies - your subscription includes the magazine.

Why not hold a sponsored event like we are to raise money for your subscription? We are holding a Shush Up! silence to raise funds followed by a celebratory sing where parents are invited in - this may contribute a considerable amount towards subscriptions.

Use National Sing Up Day as an opportunity to raise the subscription - hold competitions etc, a disco....

So lets give it a go! Be an early bird and catch the worm, it doesn't just include the website!

Yet again the children miss out. You know that there is not enough money in school budget, so why put such a high price on helping children to sing well? Please consider offering less for an affordable amount. I know you have to cover costs, but £10 for a magazine? How sad to let them enjoy these songs, only to be taken away because of an unaffordable proposition.

Firstly, Singup is/was one of the best resource sites for singing,

Like many others, we simply don't have £250 to spend on a website subscription.

It is a shame that you are not offering a more realistic pricing option. I would happily pay £20-£25 pounds for access to, say, 10 songs for the year.

It seems you are pricing yourself out of a possible revenue source.

Oh well, back to good ole voiceworks for me!
