Sing Up Staff News

We bid a fond farewell to Baz Chapman and welcome our new Director Michelle James.

Sing Up Staff News

We're pleased to announce the appointment of Michelle James as our new Director following the departure of Baz Chapman at Christmas.

Baz led Sing Up as Director since its foundation in 2007 and very much shaped Sing Up into the nationally recognised programme it is today. Baz has now moved on to the role of Midlands Regional Director at Teaching Leaders; back in his native Birmingham and (although we’ll miss him lots!) we know he’ll do an amazing job there.

Baz says, “It has been an honour and a privilege to be involved with Sing Up, and to have worked with countless committed and inspiring people who have helped to make this programme such an outstanding success.

“Musical opportunities for our children are so much brighter, and the concept of a nation of singing schools is now a reality. I couldn't imagine a more suitable or gifted person than Michelle to take Sing Up into its next chapter, and wish her, and all my wonderful colleagues at Sing Up, the very best of luck.”

Michelle James has been involved with Sing Up since the beginning and was one of the Directors who first created the bid to Government to run the National Singing Programme back in 2007. Since then, she has been one of the three Lead Partners within the Sing Up Consortium steering the programme through the past 5 years.

As Michelle now moves into the role of Director at Sing Up, she says, “I’m incredibly excited to have the opportunity to lead Sing Up through the next important phase of its work.

"I’m deeply committed to ensuring that Sing Up continues to provide great resources and training to support singing in schools and to stick to our core value of it being the right of every child to experience high quality singing at school.

"We’ve been very fortunate to have significant government funding over the past 5 years, and I’m determined that we will build on the goodwill and value we’ve created around Sing Up as we move into an un-funded membership model. I look forward to working with all our Sing Up schools and partners as we move forward.”

Michelle is a musician and mum to an 8-year old son. She worked previously as Director of External Relations at Youth Music and prior to that as Head of Marketing at ABRSM.
