Developing international singing partnerships

International Voices are about to embark on the next stage of their multicultural singing journey

Developing international singing partnerships

In our summer magazine we brought you news of a successful international project:  International Voices.  The project brought together five Sing Up Clusters in the UK, each partnered with five overseas groupings.

We are delighted to announce that Sing Up, in partnership with Youth Music Voices and The British Council, will continue the programme until Summer 2012 as part of our wider contribution to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The five UK clusters consist of four of the original clusters – two in Leicestershire, partnered with Bulgaria and India; Northumberland, partnered with Bangladesh and Cornwall, continuing their ongoing programme with Kenya.  We have also developed a fifth cluster, uniting schools in Bedale with young singers in Brazil.

Each of the five UK clusters will receive support to develop a programme of activity with their overseas associates, as they continue to work towards a sustainable, long-term partnership to ensure singing remains at the heart of the overseas schools’ programme.  Richard Frostick will continue to support their singing leadership and each cluster will produce a series of resources to support other schools involved or interested in developing similar activities.

International Voices (Phase 2) begins next month and will run until summer 2012.  Highlights of the forthcoming programmes include:

  • a cross-curricular, intercultural exchange of song, dance, musical instruments and traditional regalia between Cornwall and Kenya. Focussing on each country’s most famous myths and legends, they'll create an Olympic-themed song with the aid of Richard Frostick
  • A BEST International Concert performed simultaneously in DeMontfort Hall in Leicestershire and the National Music School in Sofia, which will see young Bulgarian singing leaders join their Leicestershire counterparts to learn more about each other’s culture and songs
  • Young leaders from Northumberland will visit Bangladesh to explore and share repertoire that focuses on the Cultural Olympiad themes, the environment and the themes of the Bangladeshi Tagore Festival – peace, equality and unity

We can't wait to hear more about what these multicultural singers will get up to over the coming months! If all they've achieved so far is any indication, we can expect great things...

Hi Ms Barry,

Great stuff that you want to get involved in developing an International Partnership.

There's a load of useful information to get you started here, www.singup.org/magazine/magazine-article/view/304-culture-club/

Or have a look for some project sharing websites, like 'Connecting Classrooms': www.britishcouncil.org/learning-connecting-classrooms.htm

Have fun, and do let us know how you get on.

Good Luck!
