Inspired by the achievement of their Gold Award, Richard Taylor Primary School has started up a Singing Buddies scheme, whereby Year 4 and 5 pupils act as singing mentors to the younger year levels at lunchtime and break times.
Teacher Carmel Wake said that when she put the word out to gauge interest, the response from students was overwhelming:
"Many are already involved in other musical activites within school - choir orchestra etc - but some are not at all and just wanted to be part of it."
The school now has six teams of Singing Buddies who sing songs and play games throughout the day with younger students - indoors, outdoors, wherever!
They research their own songs as well as using ones learned in school and have even designed their own reward stickers to give out to participating children.
Says Carmel: "One team demonstrated what they do to a recent music co-ordinators meeting and another two met Cathy Roberts, music advisor for North Yorkshire, last week and did the same for her.
"All are wildly enthusiastic about their work and the KS1 children love singing with them. Some have also been in to classrooms to work with staff and they led our assembly on National Sing Up Day."
As a result of these fantastic efforts, Cathy Roberts has nominated the school for their Platinum Award!
Good luck, guys!
