Schools 'Sing Up' in Symphony Hall

The Sing Up Celebration Concert on 31st January saw 14 music services from across the West Midlands work together on a whole day’s worth of singing activities.

Nearly 4000 children and over 400 teachers and helpers celebrated the joy of singing together at their concert in Birmingham, led by area leader Jenny Mason.

The celebration day started with workshops led by guests Sue Hollingworth and singing leaders from the 14 Music Authorities, and guest performances including Staffordshire’s Boyz Noyz

The day culminated in a fantastic evening concert presented by Michael Collie from the BBC’s ‘Midlands Today’ programme. The standard of singing and performance was very high indeed and included solo performances in a wide range of styles including barbershop, girls voices, music theatre, male voice choir and mixed voice youth choirs to name a few, together with a huge massed choir and band conducted by David Lawrence.

Jenny said: "The event was a great success and a way of celebrating the joy of singing, bringing thousands of primary school children together with middle and high school transition groups from across the West Midlands."

Editor of the janbritton.org blog (a blog for employees in Sandwell Council by the interim chief executive, Jan Britton), Liz O'Nions, whose daughter participated in the concert had this to say:

"What I had unknowingly thought would be an evening of comely choir singing which included my daughter, turned out to be a masterpiece in organisation coupled with visible passion, dedication and a lot of hard work by people who were investing their time and effort in enabling young people to sing.

"What I particularly liked was that schools from across the whole of the West Midlands were brought together; and I had a real sense that when the young people sang together, in that moment, any reference to background and circumstance was transcended.  The whole choir, including the band, and conductors was its own community."

What an uplifting concert! It is always inspiring to see so many children from different organizations coming together to share in the joy of singing - it looks like the Sing Up spirit is alive and kicking in the West Midlands!

Aside from performances and concerts, workshops are a great and fun way to celebrate singing - sign up to one of ours today!
