Three cheers for our first SEN Gold singing school

Congratulations to The National Institute of Conductive Education in Birmingham: our first SEN school to achieve the Sing Up Gold Award!

The Institute works with children and adults with movement co-ordination difficulties. They use rhythm and song activities to encourage independence and give meaning to movement.

For Wendy Baker, the Awards Champion for the school, it has been a very rewarding journey: ‘We used the Sing Up website and found that we could meet the expectations, as much of what we were being asked to do, we were doing already. That’s not to say gaining the award wasn’t a challenge - It’s been a very enjoyable experience.’

The Institute’s awards journey doesn’t stop there. They are now reaching out to work with other schools, encouraging the benefits of singing in the classroom. Wendy is looking forward to this prospect. ‘We often find that children begin to sing before they can speak and sometimes children with very profound difficulties respond to music in a way they do not to other activities’
