WOMAD joins forces with Sing Up to ‘Sing the Rhythms of Life’

African artists inspire Sing Up children

We’ve joined forces with the WOMAD Foundation to develop vocal project Singing the Rhythms of Life. The project has brought together artists from six different countries in Africa, to work with 10 primary schools in Wiltshire and South Gloucester. The WOMAD Foundation will be delivering this project as a Sing Up Flagship Organisation.

Renowned Zimbabwean group Siyaya visited the primary schools during November to lead an initial series of vocal workshops for students, teachers and young singing leaders.  They shared a variety of contemporary and traditional Zimbabwean songs including lullabies, children’s songs, games and rhymes, work songs, and songs of celebration.

In the 2011 spring term a further five artists from other countries in Africa will come and work with the same schools, bringing their own specific repertoire of songs.  The project will culminate in a showcase day of performances involving all the artists, students, teachers and young music leaders at the Wiltshire Music Centre on 17th February 2011.

Annie Menter from the WOMAD Foundation spoke about the impact she hopes the project will have on the schools involved:

“Through our programme of work in 2010–2011 we hope to have contributed to developing an ethos of singing within the schools involved, which over time will become thoroughly embedded in the curriculum and within a playground culture that embraces innovation, tradition and creativity.”
