Hundreds of children had an exciting opportunity to devise their own compositions for a new songbook thanks to Funded Programme, Sing Up Redcar & Sunderland.
This Sing Up Community, lead by The Sage Gateshead, sent musicians into ten schools to initiate songwriting workshops and help the children turn their ideas into reality.
The songbook, complete with ten brand new pieces and accompanying learning CDs, has had a huge impact. The children are delighted to see their words and illustrations in print, and class teachers are incredibly proud of their achievements.
“It was amazing seeing my class so engaged,” commented a teacher at St Annes Primary.
Over the next term young singing leaders will help teach all the material to the rest of their school communities in preparation for an exciting, culminatory, singing celebration bringing all ten schools together, to be held at The Sage Gateshead on 14th March.
Some of the teachers have been so fired up by the project they’ve also been working with additional groups of children to create bands and instrumental arrangements of the songs so they can join in with the celebrations.
