Schools across the country showcase their Sing Up acheivments

Sing Up hit the airwaves last autumn with a national radio promotion. We showcased seven schools from around the country that have put singing at the heart of their school lives.

Sing Up and the radio team visited each school to interview the teachers about their Sing Up experience and record the children singing Song Bank songs. The recordings were edited into 60-second mini-shows and played on the Heart FM and Real Radio networks across England for three weeks during drive-time.

All the schools showed their commitment to singing and what excellent ambassadors for Sing Up they are.

Thanks to all of the schools that took part in helping us to show the nation the effect singing is having across the country!

London

Nelson Primary School

This Silver Award School has been using Sing Up in novel ways including the whole school performing on an outdoor stage, and using language songs as well as games to bring together children who speak different languages and help them to learn new ones.

Guildford

Tillingbourne Junior School

Tillingbourne use singing throughout the curriculum to learn dates and subject information. They have also been going out into the community visiting homes for the elderly and singing for the residents. The school will soon be hosting their own ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ using our Song Bank.

Newcastle

Hazelwood Community Primary School

Having participated in the Vocal Union Singing Programme, Hazelwood is in the hub of a Sing Up Cluster of schools in the same area. They have an absolute commitment to singing and use it to teach all subjects. Pupils write their own songs, staff have attended Sing Up training and the children have performed in numerous public performances in some of Newcastle’s most prestigious venues.

Yorkshire

Gladstone Road Community Infant School

This is a very community-centred school, working with local feeder nurseries and other primaries to host inset days. Their achievement of a Sing Up Gold Award is a well-deserved recognition of all of their hard work.

Oxford

Windale Community Primary School

Windale have worked hard with the Music Service and choristers from the local Christchurch Cathedral to improve their singing and performance skills. They performed brilliantly in a celebration concert at the Cathedral and sing every day in school. Singing has had an enormous impact on the children’s behaviour, teamwork and academic standards.

Liverpool

St Oswald’s CofE Primary School

St Oswald’s have taken full advantage of Sing Up with several staff regularly attending training sessions. The school has developed positively as a result and has a 70-strong choir which recently won its category at the Liverpool Music Festival.

Birmingham

Mapledene Primary School

Mapledene perform regular concerts and enjoys music-making in the wider community. Teachers across the school include singing as part of their regular routine and they have performed in many events across the city including concerts at Symphony Hall and at the switch-on of the city’s Christmas lights.
