The Gold Award

The Singing School

 

Gold is award for developments in 4 areas:

  • People: encouraging everyone in the school to find their voice.
  • Skills: developing confidence and competence in singing skills.
  • Choice: providing opportunities for children to compose and enjoy a diverse range of repertoire.
  • Context: supporting the wider curriculum and school development aims.

Although no time limit is set on the journey process, it is envisaged that the Gold Award can be achieved within an academic year, regardless of whether or not they sing regularly.

We have outlined the following criteria to help guide you on your journey towards receiving a Gold Award. Schools aiming for the Gold Award will be asked to provide examples of how they meet the following criteria -

 Headteacher

  • The Headteacher sings with the school.

Pupils

  • Children develop reflective and critical skills about singing.
  • Pupils sometimes lead singing.
  • There is group singing for every child in the school everyday.
  • Children take part in choosing repertoire, and in bringing or creating their own.
  • Children can sing in a range of ways such as solos, playgrounds, squads or choirs.
  • Children and staff create new original music with their voices.

Staff (teaching and non-teaching)

  • All staff are frequently involved in singing.
  • At least 2 staff frequently lead singing.

Whole School Community

  • Singing takes place across and beyond the music curriculum.
  • Singing energises a range of everyday school activities & routines.
  • Communial singing marks significant moments of school life.
  • Pupils at the school explore and value a diverse range of singing.
